Phimai is located north east of Bangkok and 60km from Khorat. The town has Kymer ruins dating back to the 11th century and some unusual Banyan trees, the largest grouping in Thailand.
The hotels in town aren't the best (pretty shabby actually) but the ruins are on the northern edge of the small town so easily accessible and the night market has some ok food. The nearby museum is also worthwhile and contains some interesting artifacts.
